Lakes
Summary
You can find many mysterious lakes in Hokkaido. So many large lakes are still remain in the wild.
Lake Shikotsu is truly recommended. It is very near from Sapporo or Chitose international air port.I bet you become to envy us who live in Sapporo and can visit this lake every week ends!
If you visit Lake Shikotsu, also try to visit small Lake Okotanpe north-West of this lake. Lake Shikotsu is also famous as hot springs.
Lake Mashu also very famous and very beautiful. You can't go to the lake shore, however still worth to visit! Uramashu(Eastern side) also very very nice!
If you like quiet small lakes, Lake Chimukeppu also very nice with free camping site. There are no shops around the lake. Bring enough food to stay long!
Bigger Lakes
Lake Mashu
Lake Mashu is actually clearest lake in Hokkaido. The transparency of this crater lake is now more than 20m. This area is strictly reserved, so it is not allowed to go down to the lake shore.
There are 3 view points. All places are recommended, but Uramashu(NE side, approach from Kiyosato Pass) is the most quiet and likely the best.
Majestic Small Lakes and Ponds
Shiretoko Goko
Very famous 5 small lakes on the way to Kamuiwakka hot spring, Shiretoko. Some of the lakes often closed by the bear. You can see many foxes and deers along the way.
However, don't feed them. Touching foxes are even dangerous, because of parasitic worm. You also should take care of drinking water, boil at first. Ha ha ha, don't become paranoia, just few people die in Hokkaido a year....
Kinmuto Pond
You have to ride gravel road for several kilometers. There are so many footprints of deers.
It is not known well still now.
