Fukuoka to Amanohashidate

Postby ian mort » 2012年Apr月07日(Sat) 07:35

Hello cycling peoples
I have a crazy idea of doing a cycle tour to my home towns sister city, [ Nelson New Zealand & miyazu japan].Since Fukuoka is a international airport and on the right coast i thought it might be a nice tour along the coast up to miyazu near amanohasidate.Good idea?
I have a motorcycle touring mapple which is great but does not show graidents ,i know the section between tottori and amanohashidate is a killer [i read a blog, poor guy] so thought of taking inland route there, but what about the rest any body know?? Any comments appreciated even if you agree im crazy .
PS i have traveled to Japan twice before, love it.

Urayamashii! I'm jealous!

Tottori and Shimane are 2/5 of the prefectures I haven't been to yet. Did you read Bill Dodd's journal on Chasing the Cherry Blossoms? He found the main coastal Route 9 very trying at times but that depends partly on how confident you are with taking the lane in tunnels. Have your Touring Mapple handy as you read it to see which sections are the worst and decide whether to detour inland. Going inland would be hillier but much quieter and there are some nice places to visit like Akiyoshidai, Tsuwano, and Fukuchiyama. You'll probably encounter almost zero English inland.

Another option would be to roughly follow the JCN route to Kyouto and then head up to Miyazu. In my fantasies I would run around Kyuushuu a bit first, do a loop on Shikoku, cross the Shimanami-kaidou again and then pop up to the San-in Coast. Where's my lottery ticket?

How much time do you want to allow for this trip and what season?
